One of the great relationships of human existence has been the timeless waltz of mankind and the sea. This relationship and dance was no doubt born out of man's need for exploration and adventure with our planet earth's largest arena. Man has traveled it in search of foreign lands, hunted it for resources and gotten lost in its vast unknowns. Regardless of the time period or situation the sea has provided and has continued to fascinate its seekers. Throughout these interactions the artist has been close at hand. Acting as witness, documenter, megaphone and author to these timeless endeavors.

In July 2010, in America's birthplace of Philadelphia, 30 emerging young artist of diverse skill sets have enlisted their services in riding the waves of discovery in effort to provide new additions of pictures to provide visual dialogs of mankind's fascination with the sea.

It's the warm up that my partner-in-crime Reau, uses to clear his head every morning. It's great practice, and allows you to forget about the finished project and focus on becoming confident with each line.

Last weekend, I unveiled a preview of my upcoming self-written, self-illustrated, self-published graphic novel, Invisible Ink, at Mugshots CoffeeHouse in Manayunk. The project will span a great deal of time, and I will be releasing "issues" periodically as a web-comic before sending it to print. The grand opening of the site will be coming soon, but for now, enjoy the "trailer."

I won't divulge any of the story here in the meantime....it's a surprise meant for sequential format. Updates on where to go to for the reading coming soon.......

Me working on the gallery, Bo Lee owner and dreamer behind Goldmine.

This Friday the best store on this earth (imho), Goldmine Unlimited, unveils its Micro Gallery.....all 88 sq ft of it. The show spotlights the impressive illustrations of Reau, Tim Durning, and Stephanie Struse and will run for a month. I'm thrilled to be the curator of this fine show, involving these fine people.

Reau:
famous for having two moleskine sketchbooks is his pockets at all times and for painting Wolverine every week for an entire year; spends so much of his time illustrating that this gallery appearance is a rare occasion indeed.

Tim Durning:
knows how to make a compelling image; cerebral; allegorical; sequential. Studious and insightful.

Stephanie Struse:
makes portraits with paint, cut paper, and captivating whimsy.

The artworks alone are good enough reason to take a trip down Main St. Manayunk but consider this...because of a chance meeting (involving a hunt for little plastic army men) what was once a storage room has transformed into a new kind of gallery spot, in a less likely neighborhood, in less than a month. This little wonder has a lot going for it, but what really got me is that it's an unexpected little gem and a place for art where art is most needed. Thanks to Bo Lee for making it happen. Opportunity knocked last week, I answered the door, and whad'ya know? Goldmine Unlimited was on the stoop. As of today, I'm in charge of a little gallery within this Manayunk gem.....construction will soon be underway. The Inaugural show is TBA, slated for Mid-November. Look for more updates as progress is made.

If you happen to be wandering down Main Street in Manayunk, be sure to stop dead in your tracks, as I did, in front of Goldmine and check out the treasures within. Fun is an understatement. I predict great things.

It's no secret that I am a woman of many endeavors.....BEHOLD! Here is my logo design for my gardening exploits incohorts with friend and supposed long lost sibling Ky Mettler. (Whom also had a hand in the ideation)

The inspiration for both the name and the logo comes from the mythical Kylin (Qilin) creature...a conglomerate of many animals' characteristics and the supposed product of a pre-photograph verbal depiction of a giraffe.What sold the idea was its reputed ability to "walk on grass without disturbing it." Very fitting for gardening, I say. Our slogan? The Art of Gardening, The Cultivation of Art. Exciting stuff.

Following Tim, Shane, and Eric's lead and marking my return to the interweb, here is my new studio. Having shared senior studios, its interesting to see how we've all made new homes for our work. After a lil' bit of light carpentry, spackling, painting and help from my friends, I'd have to say that my studio is quite awesome. There's a ton of natural light from the skylights and just enough room to hang my bigger, more fine-arty artworks. I was even able to squeeze in a matting station with handcrafted counter-height nesting tables...oh and as always, bike parking.

WHAT A WEEK!

So here's the rundown clockwise form left: me and my Gram (the woman who made everything possible) at my opening at the Plastic Club last Sunday. It really was a great show, thanks to Michael Guinn for curating and to everyone who came out! Reau and I yucking it up in NYC, where we descended upon James Jean's Kindling (pictured) and Kenichi Hoshine's The Night Before at the Joseph Levine Gallery. The place was jam packed...in spite of slushy snow and freezing rain. And last but least I could not help but spread the news that my friend Tyler finally got his dream bike...a '48 inch Boneshaker High Wheel...makes him look quite smart....

Well, life lately has been deserving of a few "it's a long story"s. Over the past month I have had more great and terrible things happening in chorus than any other time of my life. Everything I know changed in a flash and I'm still whirling. Normally I wouldn't confess as much in this blog, but the truth is I've got some new fuel for the fire.....and I'm burning to do some more personal work specifically for upcoming gallery shows. This edition features Scarlett from G.I. Joe (particularly the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover) fame, a very kick ass female character that I loved as a little girl. I usually have a slight frown upon having too many "chicks with guns" in an illustrator's repertoire...but I admit it's fun to do every once and a while. She still needs some finishing touches. I love this painting so much that taking some time to take it further is definitely in order.

Today was a great day....I finally got a chance to attend a figure drawing workshop at the Plastic Club. I think I'll have to make a habit of it. Not only was the model beautiful, she was also willing to sit for 30 minute sessions. Truly awesome.

Here is my little ditty to commemorate the eve of the most important election of my life, so far.

Polls open in a mere 12 hours. I cannot stress how important it is to vote. Trust me. I have two Presidential elections under my belt (and we all know how those went). If you need info about where, when, and how to vote, please go here. <---partisan site, apologies.

If you intend to vote, learn your rights.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. You have the right to vote even if you have unpaid bills, parking tickets, overdue taxes, or a home at risk of foreclosure.

2. Despite rumors to the contrary, you can wear campaign shirts and pins to the polls -- but be prepared to cover them up, if asked.

3. College students can vote in Pennsylvania without losing residency in another state...just bring your student ID along with you.

4. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Don't leave without voting. If you're in line before the polls close at 8:00 p.m., you have the right to vote.

I'll admit, I had no idea who this was until a friend made the request. Tobor (robot spelled backwards...very clever) was a 1960's anime cartoon character and supposedly the earliest TV cyborg superhero. This one's for you Tom!

I'm not sure how I feel about this piece. It seems a bit soft, loose, and unfinished to me. But hey, the intention of these projects is to lighten up, have some fun, and get some exercise...no matter how successful the end result may be.

I rescued him from underneath a car on my way home from work, scared to death, screaming, and covered in grease. To make a long story short, Caroline and I were so busy playing superhero to this lil' guy that he (Abraham's the name) earned the spot in place of this week's Superhero Sunday. THE KITCHEN

Here is a glimpse of my modest studio space, which I really love. I call it the "kitchen" here because it is quite literally in our kitchen/living room. High ceilings and big windows make the room rather cozy. Our colorful pottery and the lingering smell of 3 square home-cooked meals constantly remind me that I am lucky enough to work from home!

As a digital artist this practical and affordable spot is really all I need. A lot of artists seem to want a huge space that is segregated from the other goings-on of their lives...For me working in the hub of activity is what livens up the day.

Here is the finish for an assignment from my live-in AD....a posthumous portrait of Heath Ledger. The goal was to create a vivid yet straightforward image of a man who died all too soon. Though I am eagerly looking forward to his turn as the Joker, it is also somewhat troubling that his last role was such a demented and dark character. Thankfully, I can always look back to Ennis Del Mar.

Last Tuesday, I was one of 50 burgeoning illustrators whose work was on display during Portfolio Day at the Salmagundi Club in NYC. I shared a table with my friend, the very talented Avalon Clare. It was a fun and insightful day...a day of jazz and conversations about where to go from here artistically.

A very big thank you to all the ADs, editors, and designers who were able to join us, in spite of a rainy day.

Also, thank you to all the people who made the day possible: my illustrator cohorts, the Salmagundi staff, Mark, Matt and Gina, Twingley, Rosae, Joe, Ralph, E.B., and of course, Zina.

New Orphan Works Act Due Out This Week

Today the House and Senate sent us draft copies of the new Orphan Works Act of 2008. They haven’t officially released it yet, but we’ve been told the Senate will do so this week. A quick analysis confirms our worst fears and our early warnings. If these proposals are enacted into law, all the work you have ever done or will do could be orphaned and exposed to commercial infringement from the moment you create it.

On Saturday April 5,2008, artist and producer Mark Simon interviewed Hall of Fame illustrator Brad Holland on the subject of Orphan Works legislation. The warnings in this interview have now been confirmed by the advance drafts of the bill. Learn what artists groups are doing and how you can help oppose this radical departure from traditional copyright law and business practice.

The Illustrators’ Partnership is currently working with our attorney - in concert with the other 12 groups in the American Society of Illustrators Partnership to have our voices – and yours - heard in Congress. We’ll keep you posted regarding how you can do your part.

Mark Simon has worked on over 2,500 productions in the last 20 years as a director, producer, story artist, animator and designer. His clients include Disney, Universal, Viacom, Sony, HBO, Nickelodeon, Steven Spielberg, Fox, USA Networks, ABC, AT&T, and many others.

Thursday night my uncle was killed in a motorcycle crash. He was 58. I am not sure how to process it. We were quite similar. He was a painter, a thinker, a do-it-yourself-er. He had the heartiest, booming laugh you would ever hear. We played chess, ran around art museums, and pretended to belong on Harvard yard. I had lost touch with him over the past two years, but he was and always will be an important part of mine and my family's life.

We have lost six people this year..two to cancer, two in motorcycle accidents, one of old age, and the youngest to violence. We knew each to varying degrees. I hope to paint some posthumous portraits over the summer.

I chose sloth for my first exploration of the seven deadly sins. I witness sloth more than any other vice, and the greatest example of this is driving an automobile needlessly over very short distances, especially in metropolitan areas.

It felt important to make somewhat light of a very heavy subject, to play on words, and to get the point across in a clever way.
